I’ve been gone for a couple of weeks. We did something amazing since the time of Covid and took a family vacation again. It’s good to get away and recharge from time to time, something I had almost forgotten. Getting back, I wanted to get back behind the camera again. The vacation had recharged me and had me itching to make photographs again. For this one, it was back to the basics. Just a beer and a macro lens. Get above it it and as close as possible and still be able to get focus. I do really love my macro lenses. One light, up and to the left, scraping across the top of the beer to get the contrast across the foam and bubbles. Cheers!
Beer Pour
For the past three months I’ve been a part of Andrew Scrivani’s Photography Fellowship on the Speakeasy platform. It’s been a deep dive mentoring program where we’ve covered everything from photography, gear, business and how to grow. It’s something he is going to do a couple of times a year going forward and if you are serious about your photography, I cannot recommend it enough. It has been a great experience that has taught me a great deal. The latest assignment was to take one of his images and create something that feels like it. In advertising this is called “pull scrap'“. For this image, I chose the cover image of his book “That Photo Makes Me Hungry”. His image was of chocolate dripping off a spoon. I replaced the spoon with a bottle and the chocolate with a chocolate stout.
Get an Abita Amber
If you’ve never been to New Orleans, you’ll know that certain brands are ambiguous in the City. Abita Amber Lager is one of them. It is everywhere and it is real good. When I decided on making this photograph, it had to include a shot of the French Quarter as a background. There was no way the photo could exist without being placed in NOLA.
Pilsner
Warmer weather is approaching and that means the time for pilsners are at hand. Crisp, clean and refreshing on a hot summer day. Maybe you’re mowing the lawn, listening to the ballgame on the radio or firing up the grill, a pilsner goes with that. Cheers!
Happy St Patrick's Day
I had an idea for a foam mustache. By living with a beverage photographer, she is legally obligated to be my model from time to time. Happy St Patrick’s Day. Have a pint! Sláinte!
The Alementary - Order of the Atom
I’ve had a the opportunity to spend a few days working with The Alementary Brewing Company in Hackensack New Jersey recently. We’ve been doing all kinds of photography to market all the aspects of their brewery and to highlight their “Drinking for Science”. One of the features they have in the taproom is the “Order of the Atom”. When you become a member you get special access to the taproom, special beer no one else has access to, special events and this really great looking glass. This one is filled up with their “Low Earth Orbit” Stout. Cheers!!
Beer Pour
I’ve been on a pour kick the last few days. This time around it was a beer pour photograph. I approached this one a little different as I decided to use a digital background and complete the photo in Photoshop. I shot this on a white background and then created a mask to isolate the bottle and the beer stream. Then it was a simple process of dropping the background behind it.
Founders Unraveled IPA
Hop on it! When I saw the graphic of the hop on the can, I knew how I wanted to dress this photograph. It had to be surrounded by cone hops. Luckily it is the time of the year when they can be found and I happen to have some friends who own a local farm and do grow some hops. It was good timing all around and a good beer.
Fort Nonsense
It’s a family business at Fort Nonsense Brewing. When you’re in North Jersey, check out the beer these folks are making. You won’t be disappointed. With this photograph, I wanted to highlight the Carmel color or this beer and make it feel extra refreshing.
