Legend has it that Elijah Craig was the first person to char the inside of barrels he kept his whiskey in in 1789. Doing so then created the first bourbon, There are a lot of legends on how bourbon was first created. I’m just happy it was created. Three lights were used to create this image. One on each side and one from the back just to kick a little light through it. Cheers to your New Year. Have a great 2021!
The End of a Long Day
You know the feeling, after a long day is finally done and you have a moment to yourself. You pour yourself your favorite drink and settle in. Maybe it’s music, a book, or a fire and you take your long deserved relaxation. That’s the vibe I wanted to create with this photograph. Cheers!
The Whiskey Sour
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Whiskey Sour. Bourbon, lime juice, egg white, simple syrup all come together to be poured over ice, garnished with an orange and cherry. Yum yum yum! I experimented with some new photography methods for the background and spent a lot of time with the lighting to get this one perfect.
Beer Pour
I’ve been on a pour kick the last few days. This time around it was a beer pour photograph. I approached this one a little different as I decided to use a digital background and complete the photo in Photoshop. I shot this on a white background and then created a mask to isolate the bottle and the beer stream. Then it was a simple process of dropping the background behind it.
Whiskey Pour
It’s been cold here in the Northeast US the last few days. I wanted to add some hints to that in this whiskey pour photograph. A blue gel on the light left illuminating the glass and a bounce card on the right to give the glass a blue tint. The drop was pure serendipity and I decided to keep it in the photo.
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Celebration Ale from Sierra Nevada. If you've never tried it, I highly highly recommend it. It's only available for a couple of months a year. I stock up when it is. This is my favorite beer of all time. This photograph is a hybrid of studio effects and Photoshop. The snow on the ground and specs on the bottle are fake snow. A powder you add water to and it expands to look like snow. The falling snow was generated in Photoshop. Cheers!

Two Hearted Ale from Bell's Brewery
For this photograph, I wanted a clean white high key shot. I wanted my light highlights down the sides to be clearly defined by a black edge down the sides. This is easily done with back cards just out of frame. One thing to remember when you shoot anything with glass, the glass will always show you everything it sees. While this can make it challenging to shoot, you can use it to your advantage to get exactly what you want in the photographs you make.
Planat Cognac
This is my first real look at Cognac. While a kind of brandy, cognac presents many different flavors, including spicy, fruity, sweet, and bitter. It’s flavor can also be greatly changed by the different temperatures at which it can be enjoyed. Now that I have created the photograph of this Planet Cognac, you can be sure I am going to spend a lot of time experiencing the flavors it has to offer.
Founders Unraveled IPA
Hop on it! When I saw the graphic of the hop on the can, I knew how I wanted to dress this photograph. It had to be surrounded by cone hops. Luckily it is the time of the year when they can be found and I happen to have some friends who own a local farm and do grow some hops. It was good timing all around and a good beer.
